Donate: Celebrating Women’s Right to Vote, the 19th Amendment
The Nineteenth Amendment of the United States Constitution:
“The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex. Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.”
The 39 words that make up the 19th Amendment, the Right for Women to Vote In America, were formally introduced as a constitutional amendment in January 1878 by the United States Senator Aaron A. Sargent of Nevada City. Aaron and his wife Ellen Clark Sargent, both residents of Nevada City, were dedicated women’s suffrage advocates.
To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Nineteenth Amendment on August 26, 2020, the Famous Marching Presidents produced an original play, “An Evening with Ellen,” highlighting Ellen Clark Sargent and the Nineteenth Amendment. This original work, written by Pamela Biery, is set in an interview format. Actor Mary Baird portrays Ellen Sargent, while Nevada City businessman, Rick Ewald interviews Ellen, from a present-day perspective. Terry Boyer provides the master of ceremonies role, setting the tone for this lively interaction.
