Celebrating Nevada County’s Women in History
The 100th Anniversary of the Nineteenth Amendment was on August 26, 2020. The Famous Marching Presidents recognize a great California suffragette, Ellen Clark Sargent with a historical video project designed to educate and inform.
Nevada City non-profit Famous Marching Presidents produced a video that chronicles Ellen’s work for women’s right to vote. Set in the format of a return from the past, Ms. Sargent is interviewed by a present-day host. Actor Mary Baird is joined by Rick Ewald in portraying this original work, written by Pamela Biery.
This film was selected by the Toronto Women’s Film Festival in May 2020.
Nevada City California resident Ellen Clark Sargent was a close friend and ally to Susan B. Anthony. Sargent founded the Nevada County Women Suffrage Assoc. and was a key figure in eventually combining East and West Coast efforts into a unified organization, which later became the League of Women Voters.

Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Man on the Moon
In 2019, the Famous Marching Presidents worked with local schools to join with children singing a very special song commemorating the 50th Anniversary of Man on the Moon during the Constitutional Day Parade on September 15 in Nevada City, California. The President’s own first First Lady, Karen Chizek wrote the lyrics for this special song (sung as a medley round to “Row, Row, Your Boat”) with illustrator RL Crabb, providing a fitting graphic. Thank you to Nevada County Schools for collaborating to create a special moment.
“Fly, fly Apollo 11
swiftly to the moon.
Pass planets, stars, and asteroids
to walk upon the moon.
CHORUS:
“One small step for man”
Walking on the moon,
“One giant leap for mankind”
Walking on the moon!
In 1969,
the Stars and Stripes were placed
upon the moon so all could see
Man walked upon the Moon’s face!
CHORUS:
“One small step for man”
Walking on the moon,
“One giant leap for mankind”
Walking on the moon!
The Famous Marching Presidents Visit Local Schools
The Famous Marching Presidents would like to continue to work with our schools to increase students’ awareness and to motivate their involvement in, this local historical observance of the 1789 Ratification of the Constitution of the United States – particularly with our Famous Marching Presidents and First Ladies.
To accomplish this, we are eliciting suggestions from the schools that would best fit students’ educational needs. Those could include brief classroom visitations by available Presidents and First Ladies, sponsoring essay contests, and on-the-street interviews prior to the parade. Your creative ideas are most welcome!
